The Highland Pony ~

The Highland Pony orginates from the Scottish highlands.
Highlands were used by crofters as a working animal doing farm work: ploughing, carrying, and many more tasks. Ponies are still doing this work today: dragging timber, and working on sporting estates. They are probably the most commonly used trekking pony in Scotland.
The highland is a great all round family riding pony, for all ages. They can turn their hooves to most activities: Hunting, Jumping, Driving, Showing, L.D.R etc...
Description of The Highland Pony:
Height: 13 ~ 14.2 hh (132 ~ 148cms)
Average Weight: 450 ~ 600 kg
Body: Short Cannon Bones ( ideally 8''~ 9'' in girth). Compact body, Deep chest, Well sprung ribs, Broad flat hocks and knees. Strong quaters and hindlegs.
Colours: Mouse, Grey, Yellow, Cream Dun, Black, Brown. Occasionally Bay and Liver Chestnut with a silver mane and tail.
Markings: Dark Points, Dorsal or Eel Stripe (running along the lenght of the back), Shoulder and/or Neck Stripes, many ponies have Zebra markings on their legs. White markings are discouraged, with the exception of a small white star.
Special Qualities of a Highland Pony:
Great strenght, sure~footedness and hardiness are among their endearing qualities. Along with their kind willing natures they have a super temperament. Highlands are able cope to with the harshest of weathers. Due to their thick winter coats enabling them to do so.
